Jessup, Maryland – (May 1, 2015) – The Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) is pleased to announce that 52 schools have been awarded Maryland Green School status and 60 schools have maintained their status by recertifying.  We are also pleased to announce that 4 Maryland schools have achieved Sustainable School status They have successfully participated in the program for 14 years.   These schools have demonstrated a continuous effort to integrate sustainable environmental practices, environmental education curriculum, professional development and community engagement into daily operations. This certification signifies that these schools have made a commitment to developing stewards of the earth and reducing environmental impact.

MAEOE also awards 2015 Maryland Green Center status to 16 organizations, including 3 new Green Centers.  There are 41 Maryland Green Centers providing local support to schools participating in the Maryland Green Schools program. Green Centers model sustainable environmental practices, provide teaching resources and form partnerships that positively impact students, teachers and the community.

The Maryland Green Schools Program is nationally recognized program begun in 1999. Today there are over 480 Green Schools certified in Maryland, nearly 20% of all Maryland schools.

“The Maryland Green Schools program provides a framework for creating sustainable environmental structures at school, home and in the community. This is what the Maryland Green Schools program brings to the children of Maryland,” says Laura Johnson Collard, MAEOE Executive Director. Students are involved in projects that save energy and reduce waste. We encourage teachers to get students outdoors to the schoolyard or to visiting a local park.

MAEOE will celebrate with Green Schools, Green Centers and schools that are interested in knowing more about the program at the Maryland Green Schools Youth Summit on May 29, 2015, at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis.
